HAT-TRICK FOR HEALION AND MORIARTY AT TRACK CHAMPS

Paul Healion and Louise Moriarty dominated the men’s and women’s competitions at the Terry Dolan national track championships held in Sundrive Road, Kimmage, each winning three gold medals. The races took place on August 19th /20th and 26th, the latter date being used to run off the sprint competitions which were delayed due to bad weather.

On the first weekend Healion beat Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group team-mate Mark Colbert and Kieran Leahy (Cycling Pursuits) to win the Kilometre time trial, then got the better of John Lynch (Bray Wheelers) and Brian Taafe (All Systems Dublin Wheelers) in the 40 lap scratch race. He took this third gold in beating Ciaran Steed (Murphy Surveyors Kilcullen) and Lynch in the senior 4 km pursuit.

Moriarty came in ahead of Orla Hendron (Orwell/Dundrum TC) and Kate Rudd (MyHome.ie/Cycleways) in the women’s 20 lap scratch, then proved quicker than Rudd and Joanna Hickey (Usher IRC) in the 3 kilometre pursuit. Moriarty then competed her own hat trick when she beat Rudd and Hickey to win the women’s sprint on August 26th.

Rudd had previously got the better of Moriarty in the 500 metre time trial held on the first weekend, with Hickey third.

Eurocycles South Dublin CC junior Diarmuid Cronin was also a multiple winner, netting gold in two events. He triumphed over long-time leader Michael Mulcahy (Cycling Pursuits) and William Connolly (Western Lakes) in the 20 lap scratch race and then beat Connolly and Jeremiah O’Sullivan (Killorglin CU CC) in their 3 kilometre pursuit.

O’Sullivan himself was a gold medallist, getting the better of Connolly and Cronin in the junior kilometre time trial. It was Connolly’s turn the following weekend, with the Western Lakes rider proving quickest in the sprint. O’Sullivan and Mulcahy took silver and bronze.

The senior sprint was also run off on the same day. Top honours went to Kieran Leahy (Cycling Pursuits), ahead of Mark Colbert (Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group) and Keith Bannan (Myhome.ie/Cycleways).

Veteran and tandem events also took place, although this year they were demonstration competitions rather than national titles. Hugh Davis (Usher IRC) was best in the 500 metre time trial, edging out Terry Ferris (Murphy and Gunn/Newlyn Group) and Aiden Ryan (Sorrento CC).

Ger Ivory (Bray Wheelers) then beat Davis and Ferris to win the scratch race.

Tandem riders competed in the kilometre time trial. Kevin Forde and Cathal Miller (Tandem Cycling Ireland)/Cathal Miller were over two seconds quicker than John Lynch (Bray Wheelers)/Joanne Hickey (Usher IRC), with third place going to David Peelo (Murphy Surveyors Kilcullen) and Gillian Martin (Bray Wheelers).

SPRINT REPORT (by Hugh Byrne)

The Bronze medal ride off in the Junior sprint was deferred until last Saturday due to the bad weather last weekend as were the ride off for all three medals in the Senior sprint. Recent winner of the Cycleways Track League, Keith Bannan, took the bronze against Brian Taffe. The final was run as a best of three with Mark Colbert taking the first leg against the rider who had posted the fastest time in the qualiiers. The first lap was tense affair lead out by Mark who eventually forced Kieran to the front on the back straight. He tried to lead it from the front but with the element of surprise now negated, he was unable to shake off Mark who squeezed past on the home straight. Round 2 now started with the pre race favourite one leg down, and drawn to lead out the next leg. However Mark had sucess with dictating the base in round 1 and perhaps wanted to do the same in round 2, went to the front and took Kieran on a meandering lap at a tactically slow pace. This time however Kieran kept a respectful distance and refused to be forced or tempted to the front until he was ready. A massive jump on the back straight gave him the slightest of gaps, but enough to make his pure speed tell. One all. Round 3 of this battle of wits & skill saw Mark once again drawn to lead it out. Another tactical lap by the Murphy Gunn rider trying to force the mistake, while Kieran Leahy refused to be drawn and used his positional advantage to launch another blistering sprint to win gold. A final worthy of the competition with all that is great about Track sprinting on display by both riders.
