National Schools Cycling Skills Final a Great Success

Following a series of heats staged round the country, the Cycling Ireland National Schools Cycling Skills Championship final took place in Carlow, at the St Laurence O’Toole Athletics Track on Sunday June 20th.



An afternoon of marvellous competition was contested by youngsters representing Carlow, Cork, Kildare, Meath, Waterford, Westmeath and Wicklow. With great encouragement and support from a strong crowd of supporters, the boys and girls completed a tricky skills course against the clock, with everyone from the youngest showing excellent skill and composure.



While the weather looked rocky for a short spell, the sun won through and a great (and dry!) afternoon was had by all.



The competition is in its inaugural year, and all thanks go to the schools and youngsters who have competed so well at all levels. Also, without the invaluable support of John McDarby, Road Safety Officer for Carlow County Council and the St Laurence O’Toole Athletics Club, the event could not have taken place – many thanks indeed.





In a very closely fought competition the results were as follow:

3rd Class Girls – 1st Orla O’Donnell, St Marys Trim, Co Meath, 2nd Lauren McDonald, Scoil Mochua, Celbridge, Co Kildare and 3rd Isabelle Connolly, Scoil Brid, Celbridge;

3rd Class Boys – 1st Keelan Broughan, Gaeil Scoil, Bray, Co Wicklow, 2nd Eoin Russell, Scoil Na Mainistreach, Celbridge, 3rd Barry O’Brien, St Cronans, Bray;

4th Class Girls – 1st Michelle Du Toit, Scoil Brid, Celbridge, 2nd Eve Connolly, Scoil Brid, Celbridge, 3rd Sophie Hughes Doherty, Carlow;

4th Class Boys – 1st Cormac O’Halloran, North Monastery School, Cork City, 2nd Mark Kelleher, North Monastery School, 3rd Andrew Darcy, St Cronans, Bray and Thomas Tobin, Scoil Na Mainistreach, Celbridge;

5th Class Girls – 1st Annette O’Donnell, St Marys, Trim, 2nd Adele Ward, Kilbeggan NS, Westmeath;

5th Class Boys – 1st Gerard McEvoy, Scoil Na Mainistreach, Celbridge, 2nd Conor McDonald, Scoil Mochua, Celbridge, 3rd Luke Connolly, St Cronans, Bray;

6th Class Girls – 1st Georgina Guy, Scoil Brid, Celbridge, 2nd Ruth Connolly, Scoil Brid, Celbridge, 3rd Susan Carney, Scoil Brid, Celbridge;

6th Class Boys – 1st Dominic Broughan, St Cronans, Bray, 2nd Toby Ozkan, St Cronans, Bray, 3rd Robbie Flynn, Fenor NS, Waterford.

Slow Bike Race results – 3rd/4th Girls Michelle Du Toit, 3rd/4th Boys Andrew Darcy, 5th/6th Girls Susan Carney, 5th/6th Boys Matthew Tobin, St Michaels, Trim and Fionn Kehoe, Bishop Foley NS, Carlow.
