Handcyclists Mark Rohan Secures His Second Gold Medal at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships
Westmeath Paralympian Mark Rohan added to the gold medal he won in Thursday's Time Trial with a first place finish in the Road Race at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships in Roskilde, Denmark this morning.
Rohan, who won the Road Race at last year’s Championships, was well positioned in the leading group from the first lap. The Irish Paracyclist launched his attack with 2km to the finish line, and could not be caught by any of the riders in the leading group.
Mark won all four races in the 2011 World Cup series earlier this season and has now confirmed his position as one of the world's top Paracyclists and with the London 2012 Paralympic Games on the horizon, Rohan is peaking at just the right time.
Speaking after Mark's race, Team Manager, Denis Toomey said, “Mark is an incredible athlete. The the form and consistency that he has shown this season has been incredible. Mark promises to be a dominant figure in Paracyling for some time.”

Historic start to Road World Championships by Irish Paracyclists
By Denis Toomey 8th Sept
Irish Paracyclists Colin Lynch and Mark Rohan completed an historic double on day one of the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships in Roskilde Denmark today by both taking the World Championship Crown in their respective categories.
Colin won the C2 Time Trial this morning when covering the 15.2 km distance in a time of 222:35.421 to take the Gold Medal by over 12 seconds from the Italian Fabrizio Macchi with the Spaniard Maurice Far Eckhard in 3rd.
Not to be outdone, Mark followed suit this afternoon and won the H1 Handcycle World Time Trial title in a time of 31:03.50 to take gold by over 13 seconds from Koby Lion from Israel with Wolfgang Schattauer from Austria taking the Bronze.
Whilst recent form had indicated that both of the lads were going to be in contention, there were nail biting moments as the manager and coach awaited the final time to be confirmed. To have the Irish Tricolour raised twice in one day and the Irish National Anthem ring out over the streets of Roskilde made us all feel very proud said manager Denis Toomey. The lads have been under the wing of Elite Paracycling Coach and he deserves huge credit for preparing Colin and Mark to be world beaters. He also paid tribute to mechanic Gerry Beggs, masseuse Fionnuala Kirby and assistant coach Frank O’Leary who form the Irish support staff in Denmark.
Two other Irish athletes were also in action in today’s time trial, Kerry rider Trix Schwedler finished in 11th place in the Women’s C5 race and Santry man Enda Smyth finished in 19th place in the men’s C3 event.
Tomorrow morning sees Male Tandem of James Brown and Pilot Con Collis and C5 cyclist Cathal Miller compete in their Time Trial. In the afternoon Catherine Walsh and Pilot Fran Meehan and Katie-George Dunlevy and Pilot Louise Moriarty compete in the Female Tandem Time Trial. Fingers crossed we will see more Irish athletes take to the podium!!
