Mark Rohan got his 2011 season off the best of all possible starts by winning the European Handcycling Circuit Road Race in Rosenau France today. This augers well for Mark who travels to Sydney with the Irish Paracycling Team next week to compete in the UCI Paracycling World Cup taking place there from 4th to 6th of May. “All the big nations except Canada were in France today and Mark’s tactics worked a treat to beat all comers in a fast race over the 44km course said Paracycling Coach Brian Nugent who accompanied Mark to the race in France.”

There are a further seven races in the European Handcycling Circuit during the year with the top six results counting towards overall title winner. In addition Mark can accumulate Country Ranking Points for Ireland from his 3 top results in this competition as they are all UCI P1 Category events.

Irish Squad Announced for UCI Paracycling Road World Cup (21 Apr)

3 Irish Paracylcists to Travel to UCI Road World Cup in Sydney

Cycling Ireland has named the 3 man Paracycling team that will travel to Sydney for the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Sydney to represent Ireland at the end of the month.

Mark Rohan

Current UCI H1 Road Race World Champion Mark Rohan from Athlone will be hoping the form that led to his success in Canada last year will have held up through the winter training period. He will start his 2011 season with a European Handcycling Circuit race in France over Easter as preparation for the World Cup. He competes in both the Time Trial and Road Race in the H1 Handcycling competition at the event in Sydney which runs from the 4th to the 6th of May.

Ireland will have two athletes competing in the single bike events;

Cathal Miller

Cathal Miller from Artane in Dublin has been selected in the C5 category and will be aiming to improve on his excellent 5th place finish at the UCI Paracycling Track World Championships in Italy last month.

Colin Lynch

Colin Lynch based in Macclesfield in the UK will compete in the C2 category and again will be hoping the good form that saw him secure two 6th place finishes at the Track Worlds in Italy will transfer to the road in Sydney. Like Mark, Cathal and Colin will compete in both the Time Trial and Road Race in Sydney.

Catherine Walsh & Fran Meehan

On the same week recent bronze medal winners at the UCI Paracycling Track World Championships female tandem pairing of Catherine Walsh and Fran Meehan will get their 2011 Road Racing campaign started with the UCI P1 Road Competitions in Bilbao in Spain.

Welcoming the announcement Irish Paracycling Manager, Denis Toomey said “On recent form all those selected have potential for top 5 or Podium finishes in Sydney. This event in addition to the girl’s race in Spain will be a great opportunity to add to Irelands tally of Country Ranking Points that will ultimately determine the number of slots we qualify for the 2012 London Paralympic Games.”

The squad travel to Sydney on April 29th and competition starts on May 4th.
