Mark on the podium with the World Cup trophy
Mark Rohan creates Paracycling history becoming first ever athlete to win six World Cup Gold Medals in a row on way to winning the 2011 UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Canada yesterday.

Irish eyes were certainly smiling at the end of yesterday’s Road Race at the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Baie-Comeau Canada, when Mark Rohan put in a sterling performance to win the H1 Race by a margin of 5 minutes.

This made it 6 wins out of six in the 2011 Road World Cup as Mark became the first Paracyclist to win all the races in a World Cup series. Mark followed up his double Gold Medal wins in both Sydney in May and Segovia Spain in July with a further double gold here in Canada.

Mark broke away with the Canadian rider on the first of five laps where they opened up a gap of 30 seconds. During lap 2 the Canadian lost control on the big descent hitting a kerb and puncturing his front wheel. Mark ploughed on, on his own and increased his lead on the rest of the field on each lap to build up a five minute margin at the end of the fifth and final lap. The Canadian fought back hard to finish second and claim the silver with the French rider taking Bronze.

Mark was presented with his Gold Medal and was then called back to the podium to receive the World Cup Leaders Jersey and be presented with the UCI 2011 Road World Cup Trophy. A proud moment for Mark, his Manager Denis Toomey, Coach Brian Nugent and Mechanic Gerry Beggs as the Irish Flag was raised and the Irish National Anthem rang out around Baie-Comeau.

The final day of racing tomorrow sees Ireland’s second competitor C2 rider Colin Lynch compete in his Road Race where he will be attempting to emulate Marks performance and hold on to the World Cup Jersey for 2011.

COLIN LYNCH 2ND IN C2 WORLD CUP

Lynch finishes second in UCI Paracycling C2 World Cup title race in Canada.

Colin Lynch put in a brave effort this morning in the C2 Road Race at the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Baie-Comeau Canada, to try and defend his leaders jersey where he needed to finish within one place of the Spanish rider.

Things were looking good after 3 of the five laps as Colin stayed on the Spaniard’s wheel. However on lap four the Spaniard attacked on the climb to break clear on his own and no one in the bunch was able to respond and Colin was isolated just off the chasing pack. He caught the main bunch just before the climb on the last lap but had nothing left as they attacked up the hill. The Spaniard stayed clear to win by 10 seconds with Colin finishing just behind the main bunch in 7th place. This placed him in second place overall in the World Cup competition and a really excellent result for the Irish rider.

The squad head to Italy in 2 weeks time for their last race before the Road World Championships in Denmark in September.

Irish Paracycling Manager Denis Toomey expressed delight at securing Ireland’s first Paracycling World Cup title and coming a very close runner up for a second title. He thanked all those who had made it possible to get the squad to Canada and to the Coach Brian Nugent and Mechanic Gerry Beggs for their great work and support at the competition.

Another World Cup Gold for Mark Rohan in Canada (8 July)

The Irish Paracycling Squad got the 3rd and final leg of the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Baie-Comeau Canada, off to the best of starts this morning’s Time Trial. Mark Rohan took the Gold Medal in the H1 Handcycling Category in a very close competition when Mark had just 1.04 seconds to spare over local Canadian rider Robert Labbe with Christophe Hindricq of Belgium just a further 0.4 of a second behind claiming the bronze medal.

This gives Mark 5 wins out of five in the 2011 Road World Cup series and he will be hoping to make it six out of six in tomorrow’s Road Race. No matter where he finishes tomorrow he has the overall competition all wrapped up and will be guaranteed the World Cup Trophy after tomorrow’s race.

Ireland’s second competitor C2 rider Colin Lynch put in a fine effort to finish a very credible 5th place in his TT this afternoon. The hilly course was always going to be a challenge for Colin but he dug deep and still clings on to the C2 Jersey. It will be all down to the Road Race on Sunday where he needs to finish ahead of the Spanish rider who was second today, to secure the overall lead.
