Athlone Handcyclist Mark Rohan, who this year won two Gold Medals at the UCI Paracycling World Championship and also won the UCI Road World Cup, added yet another award to his growing collection when he was judged 2011 National Winner at the Canon Hayes National Sports Awards in Tipperary on Saturday last, November 26th.

The short list of nominees for the various category awards included many of the leading names in Irish sport and covered a wide range of sporting disciplines including GAA, Golf, Horseracing, Soccer, Rugby, Motorsport, Cricket along with Special Olympics and Paracycling.

Presenting the awards was Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr. Alan Kelly, T.D., who described them as being "deserved and worthy recognition for our outstanding sportspeople". The Minister paid tribute to the Canon Hayes Recreation Centre for the awards initiative and said that the Centre was a true model of community development and an inspiration to other towns and communities.

In the National Award category Paracyclist Mark Rohan beat off strong competition from The Irish Cricket Team and from Jockey Joseph O'Brien to capture the award. In his acceptance speech Mark said that he was thrilled to have won the award and that it would be a great inspiration to him in his quest to bring back gold from the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
