Disappointment for Lynch, Season best for Miller

Reigning World Champion Colin Lynch finished 5th in the Time Trial at the Paralympic Games in Brands Hatch, in what has been a disappointing week. The relatively newcomer to cycling burst onto the scene in 2010, winning both the Time Trial and Pursuit. However, in a very competitive week, he fell just short of the podium in both events. The Time Trial was won by German Graf in a time of 24.35, with China’s Liang second and Spain’s Eckhard Tio in third place. Lynch’s time of 24.58 gave him a 5th place finish.

Speaking after the race Lynch referred to the relentless course, and expressed his disappointment in the result:

"I'm very disappointed with my result. I left it all out there today, so can't fault that. All credit to the other riders, they did a great race, and there was not much separating the top 5 at the finish."

"Next up is the Road Race, it's not my event at all, but I think I will try to get away early, and see how it unfolds."

Cathal Miller was first of the Irish today and finished in an eventual 11th place in the C5 Time Trial. Miller finished in a time of 35.14, just 3 minutes behind winner Yegor Dementyov from the Ukraine. Dementyov was 5th in the Worlds last year, 4th in the Pursuit this week, so was hungry for the win.

Second place was Xinyang Liu from China, in a time of 32.21, with Australian Paralympic Pursuit Champion Michael Gallagher finishing in 3rd place.

Miller described the course as having a lot of cross winds, and said “I negative splitted throughout the race, going faster as it went on. I did the best Time Trial of the year.”

Referring to beating Butterworth, who passed him in his Pursuit, Miller said “the best part is I passed Butterworth, my one minute man”.

In the C3 event Enda Smyth suffered the blow of his injuries in an unforgiving circuit, with relentless rises, descents and sharp turns. “I can’t blame the bike, after doing personal bests during the week on the track, but the relentless bumps and turns on the road really took their toll on me today” said Smyth, who was covered in tape, referring to the pain he felt.
