PARALYMPICS: SEASON BEST FOR MILLER JUST FALLS SHORT

Cathal Miller fails to qualify in Pursuit medal ride-off

In a morning where the World Record was broken twice, Cathal Miller failed to qualify for the 4km Pursuit Final in a time of 4.49.237.

Speaking after the event he said he was disappointed saying “the wheels came off the wagon when Butterworth (GB) passed me, I feel I let everyone down” after a harsh race where the crowd willed his opponent to a World Record time, with Miller being passed by the rider during the race.

Meanwhile, in an event that is not their priority, Brown and Shaw finished a fine ninth position in the 1km Time Trial, an event which is not their priority, in a time of 1.07.979. In a drama filled affair the event was won by World Silver Medalists Fachie and Storey from GB, with the British World Champions and Kappes and Maclean not being awarded a third restart following two mechanicals.

The duo, who have only been together since December, were silver medallists in the World Championships in February, in their first competition together. However, on Thursday they narrowly missed a bronze medal in this event.

Speaking after their 1km race today, where the Irishmen clocked an average speed of almost 53kmph, Brown said “We are happy with our performance, our main event is the 4km pursuit, if we concentrated on every event there would be something wrong, we got a PB, you can’t ask for much more.”

Shaw added: “It was great experience racing in front of the crowd again, the atmosphere here is brilliant.”

While the bike was fourth in action, the two bikes before them suffered mechanical failure while leaving the gates and were awarded a re-start. When asked if this affected their performance Brown demonstrated the level of professionalism and focus of the Irish saying “that was their mechanical, it was nothing to do with us, we focused on our own performance.”
