The heat in Rome certainly took its toll on the Irish Squad in today’s final day of Road Racing at the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Rome. As the temperatures raised to the mid-thirties the best Irish result of the day came from Katie-George Dunlevy and her Pilot Sandra Fitzgerald. The girls were in the decisive break that saw a group of seven get away in the last 3 laps. They held on to take 5th place at the finish which saw them move up to 6th place overall in General Classification (GC) for the World Cup Competition. Ireland’s second tandem Catherine Walsh and Fran Meehan missed the break and finished in 9th place in the race. They finished in a great 4th place overall in GC.

In the Male Tandem Road Race James Brown and pilot Damien Shaw were looking good in the first three quarters of the race responding well to all the attacks. The faded a bit towards the end and finished in 14th place. This left them lying in 11th place overall in GC.

In the Men’s C3 Race Enda Smyth finished in 13th place to give him 12th overall in GC and Colin Lynch finished in 15th place in the Men’s C2 Race to place him in 8th place in GC.

“Manager Denis Toomey said he was very pleased with the squad’s performance in Rome and the race provided essential international competition in the build-up to London. The second leg of the World Cup in Spain next month will be another building block to fine tune our preparations”

Mark Rohan takes first Road World Cup Jersey of 2012 in Rome

Mark Rohan followed up on his 1st place in yesterday’s Time Trial with a 4th place finish at today’s H1 Road Race at the UCI Paracycling Road World Cup in Rome.

After starting very with a very fast first lap Mark went through a bad patch which saw him fall back to 7th position on the road. He got his second wind with 2 laps to go and fought back hard to move back up to 4th place just 1:13 off the winner at the end of the race.

This moved him back to the top of the General Classification after 2 days of racing and secured him his 7th World Cup Jersey in a row. Mark won the 2011 Series outright with six wins out of six.

Cathal Miller racing in the Men’s C5 category was well place in the main bunch right up to the last lap when disaster struck as his bike skidded in gravel leaving him cut and bruised on the deck. He re-mounted to go on and finish the race in 16th place. He will be hoping for better luck in the 2nd event in the series in Spain next month.

Tomorrow sees the remainder of the Irish Squad in action in the Road race. First off will be Colin Lynch and Enda Smyth in the combined C1-C3 Men’s Race. The will be followed in the afternoon by James Brown and Damien Shaw in the Men’s Tandem Race and Catherine Walsh & Fran Meehan and Katie-George Dunlevy & Sandra Fitzgerald in the Women’s Tandem Race.

Fran Meehan who secured Silver in their Time Trial which was won by Canada with the Netherlands taking Bronze. Ireland’s second female tandem pairing Katie-George Dunlevy and pilot Sandra Fitzgerald finished in 9th place to secure their first Road Top Ten placing.
