In conversation at the start in Claremorris Peter Hawkins (Ireland Dublin IRC Ushers Insulation) commented that he was satisfied with his form and hoped to put in a solid performance on the stage. From ecstasy to agony: Simon Mulvany (Meath Martin Donnelly) suffered a heavy fall on Stage 2 but made the decision to take the start in Claremorris. 133 kilometres and over four hours later, Mulvany crossed the line in Lidoonvarna with teammate Colin Robinson for company.
