Cyclo-cross World Championships Selection

The 2024 Cyclo-cross World Championships take place in Tábor, Czech Republic, from Friday 2nd to Sunday 4th of February.

The championships will conclude the 2023 / 24 Cyclo-cross season, which has been a host of excellent results from Irish riders, both on home soil and abroad.

A team of three riders have been selected to represent Ireland at the championships.

- Dean Harvey will compete in the Men Under 23 race
- Greta Lawless will compete in the Women Junior race
- Conor Murphy will compete in the Men Junior race

Speaking about the announcement Paul Birchall, Cyclo-cross Coordinator with Cycling Ireland, said:

We are delighted to be bringing a team of three riders to the Cyclo-cross World Championships next week.

It's been an incredible season and we've some great young athletes. It was a tough selection process, and we're very much looking forward to seeing these riders compete on the world stage.

Thank you to all the riders, parents and everyone who has supported the Cyclo-cross Development programme this season.

Expression of Interest for Downhill World Cup Fort William 2024

Irish Downhill riders who are considering applying for a place at the first round of the 2024 World Cup in Fort William, taking place from the 3rd to 5th May 2024, are requested to email the Cycling Ireland Off-road Commission by close of business on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

Send in details of your name, current licence number, club and contact details (include parent/guardian details if under 18)

The first round of the World Cup is particularly early in the season this year. As has been discussed and published previously, to enable entry to this level of event, the ORC encourages all riders to demonstrate their ability in lower tier International races (C1 / C2 standard) to provide evidence that they are ready and capable to race at the higher level and will gain a positive experience from the race exposure.

The UK often provides this standard of racing opportunity to Irish riders. Early indications are that changes in the BC seeding and entry systems this year may make it more difficult for Irish Riders to access BC races e.g. Rheola ahead of the World Cup. This is something Cycling Ireland are looking into but may not be resolved quickly.

As such, if you are interested in racing the 1st round of the UCI DH MTB World Cup this year, please confirm this in writing to us. We will be assessing the cohort of athletes interested in racing and suggesting an approach to be considered for entry given the circumstances.

Rás Tailteann And Ras na mBan Funding Increased

Cycling Ireland is delighted to announce a significant increase in event funding for the 2024 Rás Tailteann and Ras na mBan races.

The funding will be provided by the Department of Sport and with support from Sport Ireland and both races will receive an equal share of funding for the first time.

Cycling Ireland would like to thank Minister Catherine Martin TD and Minister Thomas Byrne TD as well as the officials in the Department of Sport and Sport Ireland for their support – which ensures the events take place in 2024.

Cycling Ireland will be an event partner in both races for 2024 and look forward to supporting both event organisers in delivering Ireland's premier stage races for both men and women to the highest standard.

The 2024 Ras Tailteann will take place from May 22nd to 26th while Ras na mBan is set to take place from September 4th to 8th.

Cycling Ireland Chief Executive Officer, James Quilligan, said:

Cycling Ireland is delighted to announce an increase in funding for the 2024 Ras Tailteann and Ras na mBan from the Department of Sport and Sport Ireland. Both races are led by an incredible group of volunteers, and we look forward to working with both as event partners in 2024.

"The races are among the most important on the Irish calendar and showcase the very best of Irish cycling and have attracted many top international cyclists throughout their storied histories. We'd like to thank Minister Martin, Minister Byrne, the Department of Sport and Sport Ireland's support of the races.

Rás Tailteann Race Director, Ger Campbell, said:

"All of us at Cairde Ras Tailteann are thrilled with the announcement of the increase in funding. With the costs involved in promoting the event it's a huge boost for the race. It will allow us to plan our budget earlier this year and put in place important structures to make the event even better. The Rás is hugely important to Ireland's sports calendar, and we look forward to the continued success for the event going forward. It's a huge boost for the event."

Ras na mBan Race Director, Valerie Considine, said:

I'd like to convey our sincere gratitude to Sport Ireland, Cycling Ireland and to Ministers Martin and Byrne for their continuing backing of our event through finance and other logistical supports without which the event would quite simply not take place.

"I would also like to express our deep satisfaction at the fact that, after 17 years, we have achieved equality in official funding from state agencies and the national governing body. Staging this event is a year-round project and our funding is derived from a variety of sources. It's an ongoing challenge and our objective is to achieve a measure of stability so that we can be sure the event has a multi-year strategy.

Cycling Ireland College of Commissaires organised a Road Commissaire Upgrade exam, taking place on the 27th and 28th January in Ashbourne. 15 Grade B commissaires attended, representing all four provinces. The attendees were under the instruction of UCI International Commissaire and Tutor Paul Watson and Elite National Commissaire John Breen.

Candidates had to work through Commissaire assignments for before, during and after events, after which they sat both a written and an oral exam. Following this, successful candidates will be assessed on a National Event in Ireland under the supervision of a UCI International or ENC National Commissaire before achieving their Grade A Status.

Cycling Ireland would like to thank all Candidates for their interest and commitment and wish them the best for their future Commissaire Journey.
