Cycling Ireland is pleased to announce Chris McGlinchey has been selected to represent Ireland at the 2020 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships.
The inaugural Cycling Esports World Championships will take place on Zwift, the global online training and racing platform for athletes, from 8-9 December 2020. Athletes will race virtually from their homes and will compete over the same route and distance on the Watopia course.
McGlinchey has been an early advocate of eRacing and enjoyed great success in the Cycling Ireland Zwift League and with his UCI Continental Team, Vitus Pro Cycling Team p/b Brother UK. McGlinchey was the outright winner of the Cycling Ireland Zwift League, which became Ireland’s largest sporting event throughout the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition to his league victory, McGlinchey has been the top-ranked rider on the Zwift platform worldwide and taken victories over the likes of two-time Tour de France stage winner Thomas de Gendt.
The inaugural winners will claim the prestigious rainbow jersey which they will be able to wear during any sanctioned cycling esports events in 2021. McGlinchey will wear Ireland kit designed by Cycling Ireland’s Technical Kit Supplier Spin11 in the virtual peloton. The Ireland kit will be available for athletes joining Cycling Ireland’s series of Group Workouts on Zwift every Tuesday at 7pm.
