Martyn Irvine finished a fine ninth out of 24 riders in the men’s Omnium at the Manchester World Cup, continuing his good recent form in the event.

The 25 year old finished third in the heat one qualifiers on Friday, and was ninth in the flying lap TT. However his points race and elimination race showings were below what he had hoped to achieve, netting sixteenth in both of those.

Irvine fought back on Saturday, taking a fine fifth in the individual pursuit. He clocked a time of four minutes 28.589 seconds, just over five seconds off the winning mark set by Shane Archbold (New Zealand). This was quicker than the 4 minutes 28.747 which won him the pursuit event in the World Cup in Beijing, but four others were faster this time round.

Irvine was fifteenth in the scratch race before finishing strongly with a fifth place in the time trial. He ended the multi-race event ninth with 66 points. Archbold took the win. Irvine ended the overall World Cup series in 23rd place.

Irvine was best of the Irish riders in action over the weekend. Amongst the others on the team was Jennifer O’Reilly, who was 19th on the overall standings in the women’s omnium.

After taking tenth in her round of the qualification, she had placings of 18th (flying lap), 16th (points race), 21th (elimination race) , sixteen in the individual pursuit, eighteenth in the scratch race and sixteenth in the time trial.

Caroline Ryan was 14th in the women’s scratch race. On Friday the women’s team pursuit squad was 15th in that event, beating their own national record (see below).

18/2/11 NEW NATIONAL RECORD FOR IRISH TRIO AT MANCHESTER WORLD CUP

Showing that they are continuing to improve and gain pace in the discipline, the Irish trio of Jennifer O’Reilly, Ciara Horne and Caroline Ryan broke their own national record at the Manchester round of cycling’s track World Cup today.

They clocked a time of three minutes 30.375 in the team pursuit, over a second faster than the record of three minutes 31.708 sec in Cali, Columbia, on December 16th.

Although they went quicker than before, the mark didn’t move them close to qualification for the fight for the medals. They finished 15th, with Great Britain clocking the quickest time with three minutes 20.962.

The latter went on to take gold in the final, beating rivals New Zealand by over a second.

Meanwhile Martyn Irvine rode well in the qualification round of the men’s omnium, finishing third in heat one. He was a little further back in the flying lap and points race, where he was ninth and sixteenth respectively. The men’s omnium runs until tomorrow.
