Another person taking another direction is Nicolas Roche who is the title name for a Sportif in Tayto Park on Saturday for all. Also you can sign up on the day. Well, a bonus is on hand with a criterium on the cards for the final Sunday of this month in Thurles. Sadly I have to report the death of Rita McCormack wife of the late JJ McCormack. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the next day or so when members of the family arrive from America.

HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP plus support event
Cycleways CC are to the fore this Saturday with the national hill climb championships down for decision in the 'Garden of Ireland' and to be precise, Glendalough.
Man at the helm is none other than Ryan Sherlock who will also attempt to win the 'championship.' Tb totally fair to Ryan, he has selected a fabulous course and his in own words 10km @ 5.2%), a course that is approachable by any rider from commuter to pro racer.
Like any event there are stipulations:
1) The National Championship Hill Climb Time Trial - riders set off individually at 1 minute intervals, first rider off at 10:45am. To be eligible for the National Champion title, you must be Irish (IRL UCI code) and be an A3 rider or higher. A4s and riders that purchase a day-license can race it, but are not eligible to become National Champion. We will have prizes for the fastest three senior, vet, women and junior riders.
The Challenge - this is for all riders, racers and non-racers, commuters or pros, you don't need a racing license. Basically, it is the same course as the National Championship course, but ran as a mass start at 10:00am. If we get big numbers, we will split it into smaller, more manageable groups. Everyone will get their time and we may have a few prizes too. U16 (not U14 or younger) can ride this challenge too.
The organisation have also taken into consideration for both races, that there will be a car driving to the top of the course that you can give extra clothing for the descent back down.
The course is Glendalough to the top of Turlough Hill.
Race HQ/Sign-on: Glendalough Hotel, Glendalough, Wicklow, a great hotel - there are also many amenities in the area (shops, bars, restaurants and of course the world famous Glendalough Monasteries - well worth the trip). The event is online registration only (10), and registration closes on Thursday 4th of October. Online registration is available here.
Ryan is also anxious that the event will be a success and that for the future a platform can be built for the years ahead. It would be great to run a series (always has been a dream of mine).
The defending champion from DID/Dunboyne CC, Mark Dowling has intimated to the organisers this Saturday that he will not be defending the title, he won in convincing fashion last year in the promotion run by Usher IRC last season.
Casting a glance over the entries, I doubt that anybody will give Ryan Sherlock a run for his money. He is the top ranked rider in the country and his results if you were go by have been excellent. Admittedly he has missed out on top placings overall when it came to stage races!
It would also be unique that the organiser of a national championship came away with the GOLD medal. Only time will tell if Ryan comes away with a smile. Hopefully he'll remember Glendalough with fondness on Sunday. The event is been supported the Glendalough Hotel set in a very historic part of County Wicklow and of course Cycleways.
The event is online registration only (10), and registration closes today (Thursday 4th of October).
Final word from Ryan, "I already have gotten a lot of messages from non-racers thanking me/us for putting together the Challenge - also, CI has been great helping us set some things up."
Registration closes this evening at 20.00 hours - you have been warned.
Nicolas Roche Classic
Next Saturday (6th) the inaugural Nicolas Roche Classic leisure cycle will roll out from Tayto Park, near Ashbourne, Co. Meath
Nicolas Roche is a familiar name to not just the Irish cycling community but to all Irish sports fans. Following on from his successes over the previous years in the Tour de France, Tour of Spain, World Championships and cycling's top professional races, this will be the first leisure cycle in Ireland supported by Nicolas.
Son of Stephen, Nicolas is only one in four other professional cyclists that have raced more kilometres in 2012. Notwithstanding a long season, Nicolas will be getting on his bike one more time for his cycle classic.
Three routes have been designed with the emphasis that everybody is capable of having a good day out is a leisurely way. The distances are 90kms, 50kms and a family cycle of 12kms and will cover many of the popular cycling roads in Co Meath and will pass through Skreen, Tara and Kilmessan on the longer routes. Refreshments will be available at start and finish and along the routes at a designated point and a goodie bag is available for each participant.
Nicolas is no stranger to Co Meath having won the Junior Tour in Clonee in 2002 and the National Road Race Championships in Dunboyne in 2009.
This event is being run to support the Meath Youth Federation who are responsible for Youth Clubs, Youth Cafes, Training and Support in the Meath Area.
Full details, route maps and pre entry is available on www.nicolasrocheclassic.com. Entry for the family event is 20.00 and 25.00 for the 90km and 50km cycles. Some surprises are promised so come along, bring your bike and meet one of Ireland's top international sports stars and help a good cause.

STUDENTS TAKE NOTE - Time ticking away
DU cycling club are eagerly preparing to host the inter-varsity championships next Saturday week. The time trial and road race championships will be held in Batterstown Co. Meath.
The road race will follow the well known Lucan GP course covering three laps totalling 60km. It is a fast course with sections lending itself open to strong winds which could split the group to pieces as it did last year. Reigning champion Charlie Prendergast will certainly be looking to defend his title, however he won't have it easy with Conor McIlwaine from DCU, Eoin Morton of UCD and Andrew Stanley of the promoting club all getting very good results this season.
In last year's women's event Rachel Withers took the win in a two up sprint against UCD's Niamh Stephens. Last year's silver medallist Niamh Stephens of UCD may look to clinch the title this year, however her hopes may be dashed by Fiona Guihen of Trinity college being in good form this year after representing Ireland at the U23 European champs and Ras na mBan.
The time trial is an out and back 9km course starting and finishing from the Batterstown GAA club. Defending champion in the discipline Ian Richardson is hot favourite having come 9th in the national TT champs back in July. Conor McIlwaine is also a contender for this title having had a good TT at the Ballinrobe 2 day.
In the women's TT nothing will be certain with a lot of competitors coming of the back of Ras na mBan in September and all will be in good form.
Race organizer Ian Richardson hopes that the growth in college cycling over the last two years will continue (over the coming years) into the future and (hopes) is confident that this will lead to a team being selected to represent Ireland in the world student cycling championships in Poland in 2014.
Students are eligible if they are/were registered with a recognized college/university during the 2011/12 term or the 2012/13 term. Valid student ID and cycling Ireland licence are necessary to race, however one day licences will be available on the day.
Sign on will be open from 10am in Caffrey's Pub, Batterstown. Time Trial begins at 11am. Road Race begins at 1pm
