LADIES ONLY NEED APPLY, on Saturday in Ballinrobe

The Ladies courtesy of the Western Lakes CC based in Ballinrobe, intend having Saturday all to themselves! And. they are sending out a message that all females are welcomed to join them this Saturday (20th) in the Co. Mayo town.

We are all aware that the winter is on its way (if it has not arrived already in various parts of the country) that before you hang up the wheels bicycle that 'Ladies of Western Lakes Cycling Club' would like to invite you to join them on their End of Season Spins.

Some of us are new to cycling this year while others have a few miles clocked up, some of us have been out cycling with the lads all Summer while the rest of us get out when we can, enjoy being out in good company and if that means getting a bit of exercise its an added bonus.

There are two spins planned for the day, both leaving Ballinrobe at 9.30am and partly share the same route, the Long Spin is about 80km while the Shorter Spin is about 50km, both routes skim the southern shore of Lough Mask and touch the Northern Shore of Lough Crib on the return leg.

The twin events will be run off at a leisurely pace and the scenery in the various areas is stunning. There will be back up, a water and snack stop and some interesting marshals on route! The cost is 20 euro on line with Run Ireland before 17th of October and 25euro on the day, this includes lunch plus goody bags.

Event is starting from Cycling Centre on the Kilmaine Road, in Ballinrobe, sign on starting at 8.30am and the hope is to start sometime between 9.30 and 10.00am. Event is starting in Ballinrobe, heading for Clonbur in North Galway.

The long route skims the southern shore of Lough Mask on the way into Joyce Country and the Partry Mountains followed by the spectacular Lough na Fooey which lies at the base of the Ail Dubh the first of two climbs. Ail Dubh featured in this year's An Post Ras. I would recommend that you take time out at the summit to appreciate the view and catch your breath before descending into the Maam Valley which lies in the shadow of the Maumturks. The second climb appears at Maumeen. It is short and sharp, before the ladies reach Cor na Mona, that touches the shore of County Galway's largest lake, Lough Crib. The long route then meets up with the short route to journey back to Ballinrobe.

The Short routes, shares part of the long route but veers south climbing Ben Levy or locally known as 'Mount Gable' or 'Cloach Breac', then descending into Cor na Mona to link back up with the Long Route to experience the panoramic views of Lough Crib. The males who will act only as marshals have been advised to dress, appropriately for the occasion!

The main sponsors are Marrey Bikes and Cummins' Supervalu, both outlets in Ballinrobe. Also, they were lucky in securing a sports grant from 'Mayo Sports Partnership'

The chosen charity, is AIRC a Mayo based charity supporting children with disabilities.
