A very difficult stage awaited the riders today. Not a particularly strong wind played havoc with the race as they left Camolin on the open wide roads as it battered the riders from the left, splitting the bunch into 3 big groups. Rider Hudson Hendry from Halesowen UK team who attacked from the gun had forced a spilt taken 12 riders off the front including 3 teammates. The women’s race that started 15 mins ahead of the men’s bunch rode hard and steady making the men work to catch them.
On lap 3 of the 4-lap race, the 12 leaders which included Caldwell’s Conor Murphy caught the women and then the pace went up again. Averaging speeds of 45kph didn’t allow for much to go off the front more riders to go out the back.
The main field was spilt with riders all over the place. The section of road from Gorey to Camolin on the wide-open sections battering the riders with a side wind doing the most damage.
On the last lap, we say the stronger riders push on and strongest of them all was Murphy as he rode away from the bunch 13km from home to solo away and finish over 1 minute on second place Hudson Hendry. 7thon the stage but the first women home was Marine Lenehan, she will wear pink tomorrow and deserves it as she rode very strong and solid in a particularly strong men’s group.
