2024 Cycling Ireland Road National Championships Preview

It’s all systems go ahead of the 2024 Road National Championships. Hosted by Newcastle West Cycling Club, the championships will run from Thursday 20th of June to Sunday 23rd of June, showcasing the best of Irish cycling.

The championships will include the following categories.

Time Trial


Junior Women, Senior Women, Junior Men, U23 Men, Elite Men, Para B Tandem TT Mixed, Para C Division TT Mixed and Para H Division TT Mixed

Road Race

Junior Women, U23 Women, Elite Women, Senior Women, Team, Junior Men, U23 Men, Elite Men, Senior Men and Team

Michael Field, Newcastle West Cycling Club Chairperson, said:

“Speaking on behalf of Newcastle West Cycling Club, we are delighted to have been chosen as the host club for the running of the 2024 Road National Championships. We are delighted that not only will the winner of the Senior Men’s race receive a National Medal, but they will also be presented with the PJ O’Riordan Memorial Cup.

“Newcastle West Cycling Club would like to thank Cycling Ireland and Cycling Munster for their support and help in organising the event. We would also like to thank our lead event sponsor Rockwell Engineering.

“The chosen route is a testing one and the inclusion of a 5km circuit at the end of the Senior Men’s and Women’s races should make for an exciting spectator event

“Finally, a big thanks to the many club members who will be volunteering to make the event a success and the people of Athea, including the GAA community, who have all been great support. Now, who will organise sunshine for 20th to 23rd June 2024!”


Entry Details:

Entries will be open from 09:00 on Wednesday 22nd of May. Entries for all events will close 7 days prior to the event taking place, as per Cycling Ireland Technical Regulations - T10.A1.9 - no exemptions allowed.

All eligible Foreign Rider must be registered on the Cycling Ireland database.

Exisiting FR Rider - If you have previously been assigned an FR code, you must re-submit copies of your National Federation licence.

UCI Regulations on Rider Position in Time Trials – National Time Trial Championships

The Technical Working Group would like to remind all riders intending to ride the Championships of the changes to the UCI regulations for rider positioning in Time Trials.

These changes are applicable to all National Championship Time Trial categories - Elite, U23, Junior and all Para-cycling categories

Routes

The Co. Limerick roads will provide plenty of challenges, making for great viewing for spectators. Having played host to multiple stages of Rás Mumhan, the town of Athea will act as the event HQ for both the Time Trial and Road Races.

Both Junior Races will tackle the challenging outer circuit, used for the PJ O'Riordan Memorial Road Race. The Junior Women will complete 2 laps, with the Junior Men completing 4 laps.

The Senior Men and Women will complete x5 and x4 laps of outer circuit, before a turning onto the inner finishing circuit of 5.2km. The Men will complete x5 laps, with the Women doing x2 laps - A rough kicker to the finish line awaits all riders.

The Time Trial will encompass parts of the Road Race route, before heading towards the coastal village of Glin, which sits on the shores of the River Shannon estuary. Riders will return along the R524 to Athea, for a total distance of 36.6km. Para H Division Riders will complete 1 full circuit of the Road Race outer circuit.

A3 Support Race

An additional support race for A3 riders will be ran alongside the Senior Championships on Sunday 23rd June. Although no longer a recognised National Championship, A3 riders will have the opportunity to race on the same roads as the UCI pros.

Entries will run alongside the National Championships and will close 7 days prior to the event. Tickets will be restricted and available on first-come-first-serve basis.

This will be run as a support race for National Championships weekend, as such Cycling Ireland and the event organiser withhold the right to make changes to the distance, format and start time to prioritise UCI recognised National Championships taking place over the weekend.
