| Race ReportKay Howard, Cycling Ireland, Results Coordinator 03The Tommy Sheehan Memorial Classic League Race, promoted
by Cidona Carrick Wheelers CC and held today was contested over 5 laps
of a very tough circuit, not previously used for open racing in
Carrick-on-Suir. The total distance of this race was 80 miles. On the 2nd lap, a 7 man break went clear of the main
field and this group of riders rode extremely hard together. At the
halfway mark this leading break were almost 3 minutes ahead of the main
field. On the 2nd last lap, the break broke up, with Ciaran
Power from the Navigators Club USA, Paul Griffin from the Earl of
Desmond CC in Tralee , Brian Kenneally and Timmy Barry, both from the
promoting Cidona Carrick Wheelers CC forged ahead. At the start of the
final lap, Timmy Barry dropped back and on the final climb of the day,
Kenneally (as a result of his exhaustive ride in last week’s World’s
B Championships in Switzerland) also dropped off the pace, leaving
Griffin and Power to fight out the battle for glory. It was American
based professional Ciaran Power who proved the strongest in the sprint
and claimed a well deserved victory.
