Cassidy was part of a strong five man group which got clear on the fourth of six laps, and together with Healion, Dave Peelo (Usher IRC) and the Clarkes Contracts duo of Mark Sittlington and 1998 national champion Ray Clarke, forged a decisive lead over a weary looking main bunch. The quintet steadily drew clear on the tough 12 mile circuit, before Cassidy struck for home with about 20 miles remaining. <Full Report Here> <See Pictures Here> <Cian Lynch's Race Report> <Dave Walsh's Race Report> Crowley Cup in Killarney: (Apr 29) 1 Eddie O'Donoghue Carrick Cidona 2 Paddy Moriarty Dublin Skip 3 Paul Griffin Unatt 4 Tim Barry Leeside Douglas 5 Denis Lynch Kanturk Credit Union 6 John Horgan St Finbars Triton 1st B John McCarthy Killarney CC Jun Paudie O'Brien Kanturk Credit Union Vet Sean McElroy Carrick Cidona. 53 riders started in the senior event on a new course which added a third climb and with a shorter circuit there was also an extra lap leaving 21 climbs in all. This soon broke up the field and by half distance a group of 12 had distanced the bunch who would have no further interest in the major prizes. With a lap to go Denis Easton made a lone break and for a time he held a lead of 25 seconds. when he was brought back the leaders split and there was a group of four at the front. Mark Sittlington (Classic Walls) attacked but Gallagher went with him and these two stayed ahead to the finish where Gallagher took the sprint for his third won of the season. In the Junior/Veterans event over five laps
Phillip Duignam (Four Masters) went away on his own and
at the finish he was over 2 minutes in front. Geraldine Gill Wins in France: (Apr 22) In a 50Km road race in Rieul, Geraldine broke away with one other girl with 6 laps to go of a 40 lap race. With 2 laps to go they had just over a minute on the 40 chasers. On the last lap Geraldine jumped clear to win on her own. ULSTER ROAD RACE CHAMPIONSHIP: (By Jim Trainor Apr 21) Keith Gallagher (Orchard Whs.) scored a home win for the promoting club in the Ulster Senior Road Race Championship at Richill when he led in a 9-man group at the end of the 100 kms event run off in pouring rain. Paul Kane (Northern Dave Kane Cycles) took the silver with defending champion Denis Easton (Maryland Whs.) this time having to be content with the bronze. Kane led Northern CC to the team medals along with Gary Cranston and Owen Jeffries. After a move by Gallagher and teammate
Colin Armstrong had been brought back at half-distance
twelve riders went away and after a lap there were still
ten at the front with 45 seconds lead on a chasing group
of six with the bunch at 1.50. At the bell the leaders
were well away nearly 2 minutes ahead of the nearest
chasers.
On the second lap, a thirteen man breakaway formed on Cottage Hill and included O'Brien, his teammate Denis Lynch, Phil Finnegan (Cycleways), Paul Griffin (Unatt), Tom Hughes (Stamullen) Willie Byrne (GSM Safety Management) and David O'Loughlin (Mayo). This group opened up a two minute gap on the rest of the field over the course of the next four laps and despite various attempted breakaways were still together at the finish. Finnegan led out the sprint and almost held off the little 'pocket rocket' from Kanturk, who won by the slenderest of margins. O'Brien, who took a stage win at the Gorey 3-Day last week didn't make the same mistake as he did on stage 4 of Gorey, when he raised both hands in victory only to be outsprinted on the line. "You don't make the same mistake twice!" smiled the youngster, who seemed surprised to win."I didn't really expect to be up there with the big boys today. My teammate Denis Lynch helped me a lot. It was a very hard, very tough race but it was really well organised and I'm delighted to win. I'm looking forward to the junior race tomorrow now. 'Cycleways' Phil Finnegan was gracious in defeat.
"If anyone was going to beat me, then I'm glad it
was Paudie after what happened to him lastweek. It was a
really hard race, but it was a good race and I enjoyed
it." Denis Lynch rounded off a good night for the
men from Cork with third place on the line. "It was
very hard, very fast. I'm delighted Paudie won, we have
a good team in Kanturk. We all train together as a team
and it's great. Stamullen man Tom Hughes finished

Starting in Paris and winding it's way along cobbled farmtracks to finish in the veledrome at Roubaix, the race is cyclingsequivalent of the Grand National in horse racing. The 254km course featured 42kms of cobbled farm roads which had been madeeven more treacherous than usual by torrential rain over the past few days. TOUR OF ULSTER CHANGES: The UCPC have changed two of the stages of the Tour of Ulster. The Monaghan authorities were worrked because of Foot and Mouth and while they didn't say we couldn't go there we decided to respect their fears and changed the Sunday stage end to Lurgan. The stages are little changed, just the final 10 miles of stage 2 when we folow the Tour of Armagh route from Keady to Lurgan instead of turning left to go to Monaghan. The Monday morning TT is 3.2 miles in Lurgan and the final stages goes from Lurgan to Armagh and then picks up the original route for the stage to Newry. The organisers are worried that some riders may book accommodation in Monaghan. Tour
of north, stage 1: (By
Jim Trainer Apr 13) Julian Winn (Wales) confirmed his
favourite status when he won the opening stage of the
P&O Irish Sea Tour of the North at Stormont
yesterday evening. Last year's FBD Milk Ras winner won
the opening prologue time-trial of just over a mile by 1
second from Gary Christensen now riding with All Sports
International but who last year rode with the Toyota
North Down club. He was on the same time as Irish 10
miles time-trial Jonathan Dempsey (Classic Walls) but
got the better of the split on hundredths of a second.
Andy Profitt (Artic 2000) won won the race three years
ago and who is a previous winner of the prologue started
last but his time of 2.12 only have him 8th place. As
well as Dempsey there were three other local riders in
the top ten in the 125-strong field. Northern Dave Kane
cc had Gary Cranston 4th and Paul Kane (9th) while Ben
Morrow, riding for the promoting NICF finished 10th.
Today's stage starts from Downpatrick Leisure Centre at
10 a.m. and finishes on the Belfast Road, Downpatrick
around 12.30.

He went away with 15 miles to go and at the finish he had 1.25 in hand over Jim McConnell (Kings Moss) who was 9 seconds in front of a group of six. Nearly 100 riders started but the freezing rain which persisted throughout the race saw the number of finishers reduced to 16. The field went off in three groups with gaps of 5 and 4 minutes. By the end of lap 2 the back two groups had merged and a lap later only six of the leaders were stil holding a minute's advantage. When they were caught on the penultimate lap Gallagher attacked and had a 35 second lead at the bell which he stretched over the final 12 mile circuit. On Saturday Denis Easton (Maryland Wheelers) won Old Bleach CC's 64 miles Surgenor Cup at Randalstown in a reverse of the top two places of the previous weekend when Ben Morrow (East Antrim Audi) won from Easton. The field went off in two groups with a 3 minute gap. Four riders went away before the they all came together and they were caught by six on the sixth lap of the 8-lap race. Over the final two circuits the leaders were reduced to six from which Easton won the sprint. Castlereagh Grand Prix, 60m., Carryduff: 1, Keith Gallagher (Orchard Whs.) 2.35.44; 2, J. Last week the House of Sport in Northern Ireland awarded David McCann the USRT Outstanding Sportspersons Award in recognition of his sporting achievements in 2000. David finished the 2000 season ranked 12th in the World and as number one Amateur based in France and Ireland's number one rider. Aside from his outstanding national championship win and several local and national level wins in Ireland and France, David amassed a string of international wins unmatched by any cyclist since the days of Kelly and Roche. Including these wins David succeeded in collecting a total of 21 international top ten places. David finished the Olympic Games Road Race in 43rd place 1min 38secs behind the Olympic Champion and double Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich, David's aggressive riding throughout the 27mph race, including a daring last lap attack with 2000 Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong, left more than 100 of the world's best riders behind. This result, more than any other, was the main proof of David's potential to compete with honours on the professional circuit with the Polish MAT Ceresit Team in 2001. HAMILTON WINS AGHAGALLON CUP: (Apr 1) Willie Hamilton (Whirline West Down) won Clann Eireann CC's 53m. Aghagallon Cup at Aghagallon in a big bunch sprint. Hamilton had started in the second of three groups separated by 5 and 4 minutes. For four of the six laps the limit group of vets and juniors were holding much of their advantage and still had 3.50 on the second group with two circuits remaining. However at the bell this had dropped to 1.50 with the3 scratchmen a further minute back. With only 1 mile to go to the finish the first two groups came together to leave seventy riders in the finishing sprint from which Hamilton got a 1 length victory over Stephen Hanna (Banbridge CC) and Adam Smyth (Maryland Wheelers). On Saturday the opening round of the NICF Road Race league at Ballymena was won by Ben Morrow (East Antrim Audi CC). Morrrow was in the second group which had caught the leaders by the second last of six 8.2m. laps.
