CC's Portaferry 3-Day by 5seconds from Brendan Doherty
(ProVision) with Chris Green (Clann Eireann) coming
through to take third after second placed Jonathan
Dempsey (Classic Walls) punctured just over a mile from

Brendan Doherty (ProVision) took the third stage 1.2 miles time-trial to the top of Windmill Hill but Easton was third to retain the jersey with Doherty moving up to third, 5 seconds behind. Big loser was pre-race favourite Paul Kane (Northern Dave Kane Cycles) who jammed his chain at the foot of the steep hill to the finish. Kane had some consolation when he got clear in the final mile to win the final stage. Easton came home in sixth placw with the bunch, 3 seconds behind the stage winner. Although only 36 miles, the six laps included a climb of the mountain road each time and had been expected to split the field but the regrouped each time on the descent and the main interest was in the KOH competition which was won by brendan Doherty with 24 points to the 18 of Willie Hamilton. Therese Dowd of Dublin Wheelers won a very close sprint
to claim the honours in the fourth race of the ICF
women's league at the Boot Inn. Therese beat Fiona
OGorman of Staggs Cycles Lucan into second place with
Elsa Connaughton of Cycleways third. The race was a very
close affair with all three groups finishing within
thirty seconds. Conditions were very windy but the
fastest time of 39 minutes for the 15 mile race recorded
by series leader Rebecca OConnell of Bray wheelers was
in excess of 37 kilometres per hour, a very respectable
time in the gale force weather. Unluckiest rider was
Katie Mackey from Chicago who punctured just as the
riders were starting the sprint for the line. The league
takes its midsummer break for a few weeks but next
Wednesday night there is a practical coaching session
starting from Dunboyne church at 7.30 p.m. All are
welcome, please bring your bikes. NEW ICF Website is now online: (July
13) This weekend the Irish Cycling Federation is
Re-Launching it's website, the site has been completely
revamped and will be updated on a regular basis. The
site will have all the relevant information about races,
results, newsletters, rules, club listing and club news.
There will
be access to ICF licence application forms, race
applications and forms of resending results of races.
The new site will be the start of better
communications within the ICF, it is one of the key
areas identified in the strategic document.
Like all big organisations, communication is
important and the ICF is no different, there has been a
lack of communications over the years and we intend
tackling. Des Twamley Memorial 2-up TT: Ballyboughal: (July 12) The course was the same as last years on the Nags Head Loop. The Track Commission will be continuing with the series throughtout the summer finishing up with a Underage championship on August 25th and a Senior & Junior Championships on September 1st.
Eddie O'Donoghue Wins Rás Connachta: (July 8) Paul Griffin who rides unattached and hence has no team found out on the last stage of the Rás connachta that having a team is a vital ingredient in winning a stage race. With 76 miles around the hard roads of Mayo he was left stranded in the bunch and could do nothing when a group went away and gained more than 4 min. Eddie o' Donoghue on the other hand rides with the strong Carrick Cidona squad, although not in the original break, he did get away from Griffin in the latter part of the race in a group of 14 who caught the leading break which gave him the overall victory. Tim
Cassidy Wins Dickie Comerford Memorial:
(July 10) With no evening races in the Phoenix Park the
Dickie Comerford Memorial was moved to Black Bull.
The 30 mile race went out by the green sheds,
Dunshaughlin, Dunsany, Summerhill and finished back at
Black Bull. The Junior and Vets were given a 3
minute handycap on the seniors. After Dunsany Tim
Cassidy (Usher IRC) attacked on one of the drags and was
joined by Niall O'Shea (Cycleways) the two juniors
opened the gap very qiuckly, they had over 1 minute on
their group in just 5 miles. Cassidy took the flag
at the finish from O'Shea and Mark Kiernan (ProVision)
lead in a chasing group of seniors at over three and
half minutes in arrears. Women's

JIM TRAYNOR July 7) Ryan Connor (Ballymena Scott RC) won
the 65 miles Red Hand Trophy promoted by his own club at
Broughshane. He went away at half distance with
Gary McKeegan (Team Madigan) and the pair held a lead of
under a minute to the finish where Connor won the
sprint. Philip Marshall (Toyota North Down) led in the
chasers 33 seconds behind Connor. WOMENS
LEAGUE WEEK THREE: (July 4) The 3rd round of
the women's league was won by Rebecca O'Connell of Bray
Wheelers from Lorrain Manning Usher IRC and Kathleen
Gill Navan Avonmore in a close sprint finish.
There were 22 starters for the 18 mile race at Black
Bull C. Meath. Track Drop-In Event: (July 4) The first session of the new Track Racing series was a great success with over 30 riders turning up at Eamonn Ceant Stadium in Crumlin. The Track Commission will be continuing with the series throughtout the summer finishing up with a Underage championship on August 25th and a Senior & Junior Championships on September 1st. McCann Wins Road Champs: (By Jim Trainor July 2) David McCann became the first rider since Tony Lally (1977/78) to win back-to-back Irish Senior Road Race Championships when he won the Phoenic CC promotion, sponsored by Lisburn Borough Council, on the Dundrod circuit yesterday. In the Ladies championship it was also a double for Geraldine Gill (VC Lanion) who also came back from the continent to successfully defend the title she won at Hilltown a year ago. <See Pictures Here> McCann, a professional with the Polish CCC-Mat team, is a member of the Phoenix club who put a tremendous amount of work into the promotion, part of their 50th anniversary celebrations. A big crowd turned out both at the Pits and at the top of the Deers Leap to watch the 97 miles race. The start was delayed by 40 minutes because of a car crash just past the start. Immediately after the start a 17 man group went away which contained most of the race favourites. Notable absentee was Tommy Evans (VC La Pome) who went in putsuit with John Bann Lavery (VC Mayenne), Greg Swinnard (Usher IRC) and Brendan Doherty (Provision) but although they held the leaders at around a minute for most of the race there was too much firepower up front. Evans eventually came through to finish 11th. The 17 leaders were down to 14 by the fifth ot 13 7.4 mile laps when they had a lead of 1.10 on the Evans group with a further 17 man chasing group another minute behind with the big bunch behind starting to split in two. At the start of lap 8 Phillip Cassidy (Cycleways) attacked and went 20 seconds clear with Dave McDonald (Orwell). When they were caught McCann attacked and was joined by six others as Cassidy, McDonald, Denis Easton (Maryland Whs.), Gary McQuaid (Emerald) and Ciaran Power (St. Quentin) lost contact with the leaders. With three laps to go McCann tested the water with an attack which saw him hold a 20 second lead for most of a lap before a chase, mainly led by Mark Scanlon (VC La Pomme) brought him back. On the final lap McCann went again as Eugene Moriarty (Cycleways) had cramp and dropped out of the break. The defending champion inexorably extended his lead and coming into the long final straight, 1.2 miles from the finish he had over 30 seconds which he stretched to 1.12 over the long final drag into the wind. Scanlon used his well-known sprinting powers to take silver ahead of Paddy Moriarty, Paul Griffin (unatt.), David Peelo (Usher IRC) and Ray Clarke (Classic Walls). Cycleways goot the team with 54 points to the 62 of Usher IRC. In the ladies event
Geraldine Gill went from the first laps and stayed out
in front in spite of the best effrorts of Susan O'meara
(Team Letchworth) who eventually finished over 3 minutes
back. Norther Dave Kane girls Debbie Booth and Lisa
Rodgers fought out the bronze which went to Booth. NICF Northern Ireland 25 TT Championship: 1, Gary McKeegan (Team Madigan) 55.1; 2, B. Morrow (East Antrim Audi) 56.25; 3, J.
