Miguel Martinez to take up roadMapei fires Bartoli and hires Martinez: (Sept 24) Martinez is hanging up the fat tires Citing "a breakdown in trust," the Italian cycling team Mapei has fired former world number one Michele Bartoli on Monday. In an apparently unrelated move, the team also announced that it had signed mountain-bike star Miguel Martinez to a three-year road contract. In a statement faxed to news agencies around Europe on Monday Mapei's general manager Giorgio Squinzi said that "it would be advisable for Bartoli to negotiate with his future team right now."

The parting of the ways comes at a time when speculation was running high that Bartoli was planning to join Fassa Bortolo. Squinzi neither confirmed nor denied that rumor, but added "Michele Bartoli can race for who he wants to, that includes Fassa Bortolo." Squinzi added that there had been a total breakdown in trust on both personal and professional levels with the 30-year-old former team leader, who started the season in good form winning the Het Volk Classic.

Mapei team manager Alvaro Crespi added: "The relations with Michele Bartoli have never been easy." Crespi said Bartoli, from Pisa, had refused to run in several races and had recently excused himself from duty with laryngitis, certified by a doctor who was not authorized by the team. Mapei also announced that the team had signed France's Olympic and world mountain-bike world champion Martinez to a three-year contract. Martinez will switch to road-racing with his new team.

BALLYFORE ROAD RACE: (By Jim Trainor) The final race of the Northern road racing season at Ballyfore was won by Jonathan Dempsey (Classic Walls RT) in a two up sprint from Alastair Martin (Ards CC). At the end of a long season there was a poor entry of 14 riders for the Team Madigan event of whom only six finished.
With the small field the race was reduced to six laps of the 6-mile circuit and after the first lap the three starting groups were all together. At the end of the fourth lap Dempsey and Martin went away and a lap later, at the bell, they had a lead of 1 minute which they increased to 1.19 over the final circuit. Frazer Duncan (Toyota North Down) beat Norman Campbell (unatt.) in the sprint from the 4-man chasing group.

McCann wins Tour of Hokkaido: (By Shane Stokes Sept 18) Professional cyclist David McCann today won the world-ranked Tour of Hokkaido race in Japan, completing what was one of the most successful overseas campaigns in years for the Irish team. The double national champion finished 7th in the tussling bunch sprint which decided the final stage, a high-speed criterium around the streets of Sapporo, and won the race outright by 1 minute and 43 seconds from the second-placed rider. His three stage victories also earned him victory in the points competition.

In addition to the second-ever Irish triumph in the event (Stephen Spratt won in 1992), there was more success for the dominant squad, who had effectively controlled the race throughout. McCann's team-mate Paul Griffin took a stage victory, finished third overall and won the mountains jersey, while Paddy Moriarty repeated his fourth place of last year. The quintet also came out on top in the best team classification.

DAVID KOPP'S OFF TO TELEKOM: (By Gerard Cromwell Sept 12) Once again the FBD Milk Ras has proven to be a hunting ground for future professionl riders. Having seen the likes of Guiseppe Guerini (Telekom), Patrick Jonker (Big Mat), Wladimir Belli (Fassa Bortolo), Tjarco Cuppens (Flanders Prefetex) and our own Ciaran Power, Morgan Fox and David McCann go on to turn pro after riding the race, 25 year old German David Kopp, who won a stage in this year's FBD Milk Ras has just signed a professional contract with Telekom for next year.

The baby faced German took the sprint ahead of David McKenzie and Eugene Moriarty into Castleisland this year. After the Ras, Kopp continued his successful season, winning stages in many top European races and taking the bunch sprint in the German championships for tenth place behind winner Jan Ullrich and second placed Erik Zabel. "We are all fast in the team, " Kopp said on the Ras, "But I am the fastest." Look out for the cherubic features of the German sprinter at the head of the Telekom train next year.

On a very windy day, McConnell recorded 4.08.11, 13 minutes slower than his time in a league 100 earlier this year. It was revenge over Nelson who just pipped him for the senior road race title a week earlier.

Tommy Wilson (Ballymena Scott RC) took the silver and Ballymena won the team with Nelson, Wilson and Tommy Dowds. Gary McKeegan (Team Madigan) silver medallist a year ago, retired before half-distance.

Power crossed the line in 72nd place, in the same time as winner Alexandre Usov of the Phonak team.

The event is one of the most recognised contests for those of 25 years and younger, and is viewed as a good showcase for emerging talent. Power has had a year plagued by injury and bad luck, and is seeking a good end-of-season performance to try to secure an improved professional contract for next year.  The Tour de L'Avenir continues tomorrow with a 220 kilometre stage to Ogeres-en-Beauce and finishes on September 15th.

Power’s Tour of the Future: (By Gerard Cromwell Sept 6) It’s been an up and down year for Ciaran Power, one of Ireland’s only two professional cyclists. After an impressive first year in the colours of the Linda McCartney team saw the Waterford man gain plenty of top class results, including two 5th places on stages of the worlds second biggest three week tour, the Giro D’Italia, Power seemed destined for greatness in 2001. <Read More Here>

EUROCYCLES/EUROTREK ALL IRELAND TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS: (By Shane Stokes Sept 2) Usher IRC rider Paul Healion redisplayed the speed which previously earned him the 2000 criterium championship when he was the overall winner in the Eurocycles/Eurotrek All-Ireland Track Championship on Saturday. Healion was a dominant victor in the senior pursuit and also won the points race after he, Richie Cahill, David Peelo and Shane Prendergast lapped the field halfway through the 40 lap event.

Sprint victor Keith Bannon and 1 kilometre time trial winner Paul Doyle tied for second place in the omnium rankings, with Healion's efforts earning him a trip to train with the GB squad on the Manchester Velodrome this winter.

Of the junior riders, Stephen Enright was in storming form, winning the 1 kilometre time trial, the pursuit and the points championships. James Lattimore won the sprint, while team mate Tim Cassidy was left rueing his luck after mechanical problems caused his withdrawal from the pursuit final.

Lorraine Manning was the most successful of the women with gold in both the 500 metre time trial and the 6 lap scratch race, while Louise Moriarty overcame Gillian McDarby to win the sprint.

All medal winners will form the basis for a national squad next season, further building on recent efforts to revive the discipline. The assistance of Dublin Corporation, the Irish Sports Council and capital grants funding has already led to good progress, with the recent Olympic and world championships successes of British cycling showing what is possible with the right support.

Elsewhere, Mark Kenny rode well in the world master's championship in Bromont, Canada. In a field containing a number of professionals, the Rocky Mountain rider finished in 32nd place in the 30-34 age group. The race was won by Italian rider Pierluigi Bettelli.
